A laptop's portability frequently exposes the device and its components to potential damage. Laptop AC power connectors can be damaged when the cord is pulled through a walkway by people tripping on the cord, and through frequent plugging and unplugging in stiff power sockets that require forceful removal. Replace a damaged laptop AC power connector using a few tools and a replacement plug.
Cut the AC plug and damaged cable end from the AC adapter using a wire cutter and discard. Cut three inches of the protective plastic jacket from the power cord using a wire stripper tool. Cut one inch of the protective plastic jacket from the end of each wire that protrudes from the power cord.
Loosen and then set aside the screws attached to the AC plug replacement. Slide the cord into the plug housing from the small end of the housing. Confirm that the prong screws on the back of the AC plug replacement are loose, and then place the white wire from the power cord on the silver prong at the back of the replacement plug. Tighten the screw on the silver prong to secure the white wire.
Place the black wire from the power cord on the gold prong at the back of the replacement plug. Tighten the screw on the gold prong to secure the black wire. Place the green wire from the power cord on the green prong at the back of the replacement plug. Tighten the screw on the green prong to secure the green wire.
Confirm that the wires make good contact with the prong to which they are fastened, and also that each wire touches only one prong. Slide the AC replacement plug housing down the cord and over the back of the replacement plug. Secure the housing in place using screws provided with AC replacement plug.
